Compost Fail

If I show you my failures will it help you have more courage to start or keep gardening?  Well, I'll share anyway.

The weather warmed up quickly here and we were dumping a lot of compost.  The children take turns taking it out and I add dry leaves, soil, or weeds to cover it as needed.  Well, I didn't check it for a few days and then noticed a bunch of flies out there.  On closer inspection I saw a wriggling mass of maggots and jumped back from the pile.  After alerting my husband he decided the thing to do was to burn them.

So that is why the children are standing there watching him use a torch to burn them.  I didn't get close enough again to get a pic of the nasty bugs but I'm sure you can imagine what they looked like.  Gross!

And now since you endured that story I will share some photos I took of my flowers while the maggot massacre was going on.
