Write With World

Write With World is a writing curriculum for middle school students from the publishers of God's World News and World Magazine. The course is made up of 4 units with 4 lessons in each unit.  Each lesson has 5 capsules of daily reading and writing assignments.  Here is what the publisher has to say about the goals of this curriculum:

"Write with World aims to produce young writers who love writing, can write effectively, and intelligently share ideas, beliefs, and their worldview.  We hope to support a generation of young believers who aspire to use their writing skills in the service of God's Kingdom and explain effectively the reasons for their beliefs."

Distinctives of this course:
*Students belong to a community of writers and have an audience
*Students see the curriculum as a living, up-to-date conversation
*Students have access to multiple assignments to choose from in many lessons
*Students who learn to read with critical eyes are more likely to become strong writers
*Students will examine models-both strong and weak- to improve their writing
*Students learn style in the context of their own writing
*Students learn to write with a worldview
*Writing teachers need ideas and support

About the Authors

Intro to Teacher's Edition

This is the first year of a two year curriculum.  It can be used in grades 6-9 or even High School if the student has not had much training in writing. A special website will be available in September which will provide opportunity for students to be published online.  Extra writing subjects will also be available at the website to keep writing topics current.

I chose Unit 3, Lesson 2 to show you how a lesson is laid out in this course.

Capsule 1-World Wisdom-The Real Me, features World Wisdom; an author's commentary on what elements make a good biography.

Capsule 2- What Makes You You?, includes The Professor's Office; an explanation of why to use brainstorming

Capsule 3- Inside Events

Capsule 4-The You of Yesterday, uses family photographs to look at the student from the past.

Capsule 5- Considering Possibilities, features Style Time; a quick grammar lesson on tense and vocabulary review.

Each capsule has a brief discussion of the topic and then a journal assignment for the student to explore in his journal.  Extra features as outlined above are spread throughout the capsules.  I like the way grammar is handled in the Style Time section of each lesson.  It is more like a friendly talk that points out common errors writers make and how to avoid them.

The parent/teacher edition is exactly the same as the student's edition but includes teaching tips in the margins and notes, including how to grade student work at the beginning of each lesson.

I enjoyed this program!  I love the tone it is written in which gives me the feeling of having lunch with a fellow writer as he teaches me what he has learned about writing.  Sure there are journal assignments but they go along with each topic and are personal, not some vague assignment that seems to have no meaning behind it.  As a parent I appreciate the grammar and vocabulary elements.  My daughter appreciated that the grammar lessons were light and easy to understand.  As a Christian I enjoyed knowing I had a book I could give my daughter to use that was not offensive to our faith.

My 12-year old daughter enjoyed working through this book.  Some of the journal questions seemed overwhelming to her at first.  After we discussed them together she was then able to work on them in her journal.  The reason my daughter was overwhelmed is because I have not required her to write much before now.  This is something we will have to work on together.

The focus of the writing assignments being in a journal makes writing more personal for the student and hopefully shows them that writing can be an excellent tool to know yourself and maybe even something fun to experiment with.  I want my children to love writing as much as I do and I think the gentle approach presented in Write With World is a tool that will help them achieve this goal.

This book will be a permanent fixture in our writing line up!
