Inference Jones Beginning, Using Higher-order Thinking To Improve Critical Reading and Comprehension by Robert E. Owen, M.A.
Inference Jones is available from The Critical Thinking Company.
Inference Jones Beginning was written for grades 3-4 but can be used for older students in grades 5-12 as remedial work. The goal of this 42 page book is to improve critical reading and higher-order thinking skills. Each exercise is a short story followed by true-false, multiple choice, and questions requiring a written answer about the passage. The questions help students learn how to draw inferences from a written passage. They learn to think about what they have just read in order to answer questions about ideas that may not have been clearly stated in the passage.
The book includes clear teaching instructions on how to use Inference Jones with your students. A sample reading passage with the answers is included. There is also a chart which shows the skills taught for each story and the answers to the lessons are included in the back of the book.
We received an e-book which I printed out in order to use. I read each story aloud to my 2nd, 4th and 6th grade students and then asked them to answer each question. The book was simple and easy to implement. The stories grow longer as your go through the book with more difficult questions to answer.

My children enjoyed each passage and had fun answering the questions. If they had a difficult time answering any of the questions I would reread the relevant part of the passage and then they could find the right answer. I felt this book was a fun way to check up on my children's reading comprehension. We had fun discussing some of the questions and laughed about the conclusions we came to.
Overall, this was a fun and easy to use book to practice critical reading and comprehension skills.
