TOS Crew Review: Mad Dog Math

Mad Dog Math

Mad Dog Math has put together a math drill program to help students master their math facts.  The program drills addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  It is for grades K-5 and can also be used by students in middle school and high school who need to improve their skills.  The student is advised to make a 5 days per week, 10 minute per day time commitment to use the program.   The program can be used in the classroom or the home and is downloaded as a 32 or 64 bit version after purchase.

To understand more about how this program works please watch the video below.  Julie explains how she uses the program in the classroom.

The Mad Dog Math software was easy to download and install on my computer.  It has a clean look with a simple dog and bone theme.  When you open the program the dog barks a few times as you get ready to work.  Once you log in with your name you can get to work practicing your facts.  If you begin at Level 1 you will be drilled on addition and subtraction separately starting with the fact families 0-3 and ending with 12-18.  To complete the drill the answer to each problem is typed in a blank box.  At the end of the allotted time the dog barks.  There are three time increments used to improve the student's speed; 2 minutes, 1 minute, and 30 seconds.  The student can practice before beginning timed work if he chooses.

Level 2 drills addition and subtraction but the family groups are larger.  The first group is 0-6 followed by 7-9 and then the rest of the families individually.  To complete the drills the student finds the missing number in the problem instead of entering the answer.

Level 3 covers multiplication and division.  And the challenge level mixes all of the operations together.  For each level the student earns stickers which are placed on their drill page.  Each level has 3 stickers, one for each time challenge.

My children enjoyed using this product.  It was easy for them to get started and they had fun meeting each time limit.  I appreciated that they could use the program on their own.  I think it will increase their recall speed of math facts.  It is easy for me to log in to each of their accounts to check on their progress and make sure they are using the program properly.  As they answer each group of problems correctly in the allotted time the program lists the family they should work on next.  My children didn't notice this message until I pointed it out to them.
