TOS Crew Review: VocabAhead
VocabAhead SAT Vocabulary: Cartoons, Videos + MP3S by Lafanzi Publications,The entertaining and effortless vocabulary building solution!
The beginning of the book mentions that 10% of all profits are donated to non-profit organizations providing educational services in under-developed countries.
In the how to use this book section the student is directed to study one chapter, which covers 10 words, each day. The student should use two of the modules to study the words. The choice of modules are book, MP3, and videos. There are 30 units or 300 words contained in the VocabAhead book.
After the student has studied the words he can use the review at the end of each chapter to test his mastery of the definitions. Each review page contains two types of tests, match the word to the definition and fill in the blanks. The answers are listed in the back of the book.
In the book each vocabulary word is illustrated with a cartoon. The definition of each word is given and used in a few sentences. The synonyms and antonyms are also listed.
There is a free study room on the VocabAhead website where you can watch videos, quiz yourself, or use flashcards.
I think this book is a good way to review and learn vocabulary. It would be an easy tool to add to SAT test prep. Having the three different forms(book, video, MP3) should help students with different learning styles learn the vocabulary words. Adding this to the school day will only take a few minutes. I think the two different modules should be studied at different times each day and then take the test the next day. We used this book a little slower than recommended but an older student who wanted a quick review could easily do the 30 modules a month or so before he took his SAT.
The words are indexed in the back of the book making it easier to use the MP3s, videos, and book together. The MP3s consist of a man or woman reading the word along with the definition and then the same sentences that are in the book. The videos show the same cartoons contained in the book but in color. The same text from the book is read while you see the cartoon and words.
