Productive Pursuits for Children and Mom
I have been crocheting since I was a preteen and have always wanted to learn to knit. I thought it would be difficult to learn but decided to take the plunge and do it anyway. I found a few websites with tutorials, bought my supplies and started last weekend. It was much easier than I thought it would be. I think having the experience with crochet made it easy to learn how to knit. I can cast on, knit, purl, and bind off! So now I am making a washcloth using stockinette and seed stitch. So cool!
The children were very interested in what I was doing so I taught a few of them how to crochet. They spent a day working on the chain stitch and then I taught them how to single crochet. Once they are working quickly and easily I will teach them a few more stitches and then they will be ready for their first real project. Right now they say they are making blankets or scarfs but after awhile they get bored and take them apart and start over.
We bring our projects out in the evening and work and chat. This is a nice way to spend some time together. I taught my two oldest boys to crochet when they were about 8 so they had to show off their skills for the younger people. Caleb took over my knitting and made me show him how to make the knit stitch. He is Mr. Mechanical so he needs to know how things work.
I can see lots of cozy evenings in our future.
Here are some links if you want to learn how to knit.
