This is the simplest, most entertaining way to learn vocab. words that I have ever seen!
To use the book you turn to the page containing the word you want to learn, read the main word, link word, caption and study the cartoon. The caption combines the main word and the link word in a memorable sentence which the cartoon illustrates. There is a quiz page after every ten words so you can test your mastery of the words you just studied. The quiz has two sections and is contained on one page. The top section asks you to match the word to its definition and the bottom section has you fill in the missing word in each sentence.
The black and white illustrations are entertaining and memorable. This book is 347 pages long with a section at the end containing answers to the quizzes. No teacher prep is needed, the book is nonconsumable, and definitely a perfect fit for visual learners.
My first impression of this book was surprise. The cartoons were fun to look at, the captions were clever, and i knew my students would like it.
I handed the book to my high school senior since he is a visual learner and waited to hear his reaction. He left the room with the book. I looked in on him a little bit later thinking that he had laid the book aside and was surprised to see him engrossed in the book! He doesn't like to read so this was very surprising to me.
I asked my son to use the book every day to study the words and then take each quiz when he was ready. He was surprised at how easy it was to learn the words and that he did well on each quiz.
I would recommend this product for any Jr. High or High School student who needs to improve his vocabulary or study for the SAT. I think this book would be especially good for those students who don't like to read. All of my readers from 1st grade and up enjoyed looking at this book. It is hard to keep it put away on the shelf.
Nifty things I found on the New Monics website:
*Cartoon samples, elementary and SAT (for 7th-12th grade)
Check these out to get a better idea of how the cartoons work. You can even download some samples to print and share with your students.
*Teaching strategies
You can also download a pdf document to print. This page has many different ways to teach and use the cartoons. 20 different strategies are listed.
